Horton Kirby 50m Brick Chimney |

The Task |
The grade two listed 50m chimney based in the middle of a housing complex had begun to deteriorate, so mortar was becoming a real fall risk for residents and cars below. A different contractor wrapped the chimney in plastic to temporarily stop any falling debris, but this soon began to deteriorate and reveal sections of the chimney therefore posing a Health and Safety risk. |
The Solution |
Crown Services were contacted to strip the plastic wrapping off the chimney and come up with a new workable solution. We erected cradles to access the full height of the chimney on each side, before installing our specialist bespoke masonry encapsulation netting which then caught any failed mortar and prevented any fall risks at ground level. Since the chimney is grade listed, Sevenoaks Council and conservation officers were involved with all works. The final stage of this project was to install a frame deck scaffold to the summit of the chimney, carefully remove the netting one section at a time, then rake out and repoint the mortar joints before moving down to the next section. We worked with the residents throughout the project to ensure they were kept up to date with the progress of the work and put a huge emphasis on keeping the site tidy and safe so that it had minimal effect on the busy car park below. Resident involvement was actively encouraged throughout the programme of work, so that all stakeholders had input into the working hours. |
